Rio - Antirrio ferry
The Rion ferry is located north of the city of Patras and is about 12 km away. In Rio, the O.L.P.A. has only berths and an electrical lighting network. A port outpost is under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority. The two piers (east and west) on either side of the Moraes Castle in the area of the ferry are also under the jurisdiction of OLP.
The frequency of use of the East and West piers depends crucially on the weather conditions and primarily on the wind direction.
In the Eastern pier of Rio the port area occupies an area of 11.136 sq.m. It has berths of approximately 395 meters in length which are equipped with bollards. The deck is paved and the area is lit by two 35 m high masts. The pier has only berths and no land area and is adjacent to an area owned by the Greek National Tourism Organisation.
The West Pier of Rio occupies an area of 39.156 sq.m. including the temporary pier of 18.205 sq.m. constructed to serve the ferry due to the construction of the Rio-Antirrio bridge. It has 259 m long berths equipped with bollards. The deck is asphalted and there are 3 lighting pillars, each 35 m high.
The traffic on the Rio-Antirrio ferry has decreased significantly with the opening of the bridge, however the competitiveness of the ferry’s tariffs compared to the bridge tolls is a comparative advantage for the ferry traffic. The aim of the L.P.A. S.A.’s objective is also the utilisation of the land area released under the bridge in the framework of consensus and cooperation with the local community.
