SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Apulia and Greece face common challenges and constraints in ensuring sustainable practices in the nautical tourism sector. Both regions are characterized by high seasonality and the concentration of intense tourism flows, with most tourists considering Apulian and Greek destinations as points of departure and arrival for sailing boats, motorboats, and yachts moving across the Adriatic area.
Both regions are confronted with the pressing need to update their institutional framework, improve management, and upgrade the available facilities of marinas and small touristic ports to make them greener, smarter, and more resilient.
Nautical tourism traffic can also be influenced by factors such as the presence of a qualified workforce with green skills and environmental awareness that can actively help minimize negative impacts on the marine environment.
The “ARGONAUT – chARting a Greener cOurse for NAUtical Tourism” project aims to address these challenges by adopting a holistic and effective approach to sustainable nautical tourism, with the goal of enhancing the overall quality of the nautical tourism experience in the area and promoting a positive reputation for all involved destinations.
The project proposes an integrated approach, combining green and digital technology with best practices exchange and stakeholder education, representing an innovative leap beyond current practices.
Key pilot solutions include energy-efficient port facilities and the introduction of the Adriatic Maritime Route Planner, a digital platform offering eco-conscious route options.
ARGONAUT also includes a comprehensive capacity-building program aimed at equipping local stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed to adopt and maintain green practices, embedding sustainability into the culture of local tourism. Furthermore, it establishes a solid network of marinas to contribute to the harmonization of nautical tourism practices.
This approach goes beyond standard practices, creating a replicable, cross-border model for sustainable tourism.
